One Second Every Day 2020

2020 was, in short, a shitshow. Am I right? However, at least for me personally, it wasn’t all bad. In fact, in reviewing my year through my One Second a Day video from 2020, I have to acknowledge that my 2020 was pretty dang great. I coached my first winter guard season for Parrish Community High, we went to Nashville, I got engaged, Jared and I bought a house, I spent a summer in the Keys with my parents and our dogs, I got my first teaching job with the absolute best group of kids, we went to almost every home Gator game, I reached the 250 club in Pure Barre, I became TikTok famous (follow me @sammyraejohnson), and I got to do all the wedding festivities a bride not in the middle of a pandemic would get to do surrounded by people who love me. Heck, I even got to go to Disney a few times!

Discussing 9/11 with 5th Graders

The week before 9/11, I was looking around online for lessons or activities to do with my students to teach them about the tragic event. It’s important to me that we discuss it and that they know about it. However, none of the things I was seeing on Pinterest or Teachers Pay Teachers felt right. I didn’t want to do a craft or make them use their reading strategies to answer questions. I just wanted them to understand all the aspects that make 9/11 so important.
