Discussing 9/11 with 5th Graders
The week before 9/11, I was looking around online for lessons or activities to do with my students to teach them about the tragic event. It’s important to me that we discuss it and that they know about it. However, none of the things I was seeing on Pinterest or Teachers Pay Teachers felt right. I didn’t want to do a craft or make them use their reading strategies to answer questions. I just wanted them to understand all the aspects that make 9/11 so important.

Dive into Reading
As you all know, I love to read. So when I heard about a mentor program called Dive into Reading through Anna Maria Oyster Bar where volunteers work with students on their manners and social skills, as well as their reading, I signed up immediately. I partook in the program as a mentor the summer of 2017 and just signed up to do it again this June! Here’s all the information you need in case you want to volunteer this summer too.
My Unconventional Path to Teaching
I didn’t come to the teaching profession in a conventional way. When I was little, my favorite thing to do was play school with my stuffed animals and all four of my grandparents were educators, but I never thought I would follow suit.
