In Florida, especially in the summer, you can almost guarantee it will rain every day. Our hurricane season is from June to November, but rain any time of the year won’t faze a Floridian. If you’re planning a trip to Walt Disney World and the forecast calls for rain, here are some tips for taking on Disney in the rain.

1. Wear quick-dry clothes

If there is a good chance it will rain, I highly recommend wearing clothes that will dry quickly, like Nike running shorts. Avoid thick fabrics that will take a while to dry and you will be much more comfortable during your day in the parks.

2. Bring two pairs of shoes on vacation

If you’re spending more than one day at Disney, bring an extra pair of shoes in case it rains. You won’t want to wear wet sneakers all day in the park the day after it rains. To dry your sneakers out quicker, put crumpled up sheets of newspaper in your shoes and they will help soak up the water.

3. Protect your electronics

Stick a few sandwich and gallon plastic baggies in your bag when you go to the parks. If it starts raining, you can easily protect your electronics by sticking them in the plastic bags. This is also helpful for riding water rides in the parks.

4. Save money, bring a poncho

If you get caught in the rain unexpectedly while you’re in the parks, you can buy a poncho in a shop on Main Street for $9. If you want to save yourself the money and not worry about them being sold out once it starts raining, pack your own poncho. You could also bring an umbrella or a rain jacket. Pretty Little Monograms has the cutest Disney-themed rain jackets to sport in the parks when it gets a little (or a lot) wet.

5. Head to Tomorrowland

Often when it storms, some of the outdoor rides will shut down, especially the rollercoasters like Big Thunder Mountain and Splash Mountain. This is all for safety reasons if there is lightning in the area. I recommend heading over to Tomorrowland, which has the least amount of rides that will shut down in the rain. With options like Space Mountain, Buzz Lightyear, Carousel of Progress, Stitch’s Great Escape, and Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor that are indoor rides and have (mostly) indoor queues, Tomorrowland is the place to hang out in the rain.

Other rides to stick to in a storm in other lands of Magic Kingdom are Mickey’s Philharmagic, It’s a Small World, and Peter Pan’s Flight.

6. Don’t miss the parade

If the rain is too bad for the usual parade floats to come out, Disney will have the Rainy Day Character Cavalcade instead. Characters pile into Main Street vehicles and ride down the parade route. I haven’t seen the parade in person, but if it’s raining that badly, it’s definitely worth waiting for the parade to see this unique experience Disney has to offer.

7. Shop til you drop

One of the biggest hacks to avoid crowds, heat, and rain is to walk through the shops along Magic Kingdom’s Main Street. All the shops are connected so you can walk straight through all the way down Main Street. These shops do get more crowded when it is raining, but it’s still a good way to spend time and avoid the rain without leaving the park.

8. Don’t leave!

Most importantly, stay in the park! So many people will leave the parks, especially when the outdoor rides start closing down. Put these tips into action and brave the rain. It’ll be worth it for the shorter lines since a majority of the rides stay open in the rain.
